Predatory Mites

A mite next to a dime

The photo above depicts a predatory mite (red arrow) next to a dime.  Predatory mites are natural enemies of soil dwelling insects, and are effective biocontrol agents in agricultural systems.  Studies are ongoing to understand the efficacy of predatory mites to control mushroom fly populations.  Preliminary laboratory studies suggest when applied appropriately, predatory mites may control up to 70% of the mushroom fly populations.  Research is being done to asses and optimize the use of predatory mites on mushroom farms.
